    Phase ambiguity resolution for offset QPSK modulation systems

    A demodulator for Offset Quaternary Phase Shift Keyed (OQPSK) signals modulated with two words resolves eight possible combinations of phase ambiguity which may produce data error by first processing received I(sub R) and Q(sub R) data in an integrated carrier loop/symbol synchronizer using a digital Costas loop with matched filters for correcting four of eight possible phase lock errors, and then the remaining four using a phase ambiguity resolver which detects the words to not only reverse the received I(sub R) and Q(sub R) data channels, but to also invert (complement) the I(sub R) and/or Q(sub R) data, or to at least complement the I(sub R) and Q(sub R) data for systems using nontransparent codes that do not have rotation direction ambiguity

    A new root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. (Nematoda : Meloidogynidae), parasitizing Robusta coffee from Western Highlands, Vietnam

    A new root-knot nematode, parasitizing Robusta coffee in Dak Lak Province, Western Highlands of Vietnam, is described as Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. Morphological and molecular analyses demonstrated that this species differs clearly from other previously described root-knot nematodes. Morphologically, the new species is characterized by a swollen body of females with a small posterior protuberance that elongated from ovoid to saccate; perineal patterns with smooth striae, continuous and low dorsal arch; lateral lines marked as a faint space or linear depression at junction of the dorsal and ventral striate; distinct phasmids; perivulval region free of striae; visible and wide tail terminus surrounding by concentric circles of striae; medial lips of females in dumbbell-shaped and slightly raised above lateral lips; female stylet is normally straight with posteriorly sloping stylet knobs; lip region of second stage juvenile (J2) is not annulated; medial lips and labial disc of J2 formed dumbbell shape; lateral lips are large and triangular; tail of J2 is conoid with rounded unstriated tail tip; distinct phasmids and hyaline; dilated rectum. Meloidogyne moensi n. sp. is most similar to M. africana, M. ottersoni by prominent posterior protuberance. Results of molecular analysis of rDNA sequences including the D2-D3 expansion regions of 28S rDNA, COI, and partial COII/16S rRNA of mitochondrial DNA support for the new species status

    Application of Random Walk Model for Timing Recovery in Modern Mobile SATCOM Systems

    In a modern mobile satellite communication (SATCOM) system, a ground terminal receiver receives a radio frequency signal that is demodulated to generate a baseband digital signal waveform containing a self-clocking bit stream of digital data. The received baseband digital signal waveform is recovered and tracked using a timing recovery loop (TRL). The traditional TRLs use early-and-late gates, digital transition tracking, filter-and-square, and delay-and-multiply functions. In bit timing detection, the bit stream is self-clocking and the timing differential dithers about correct bit timing in the TRLs. For mobile satellite communication environments, the traditional TRLs drop lock when the loop signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is smaller than a threshold value or the residual Doppler frequency is larger than the operating loop bandwidth. After dropping lock, the traditional TRLs experience long hang up time due to the need to reacquire the timing pulses. Recently, random walk filters (RWF) have been adapted to improve the bit clock locking stability and are applied to recover bit timing information of a digital data stream. This chapter describes random walk model for timing jitter and discusses how RWF solution can address the timing recovery challenges in mobile satellite communication environments

    Perspective Chapter: Program Planning and Management for Defense Advanced Concept Technology Programs

    The complexity of program planning and management (PPM) for defense programs and related projects depends on the program types and associated budget size. In general, the defense program types can be classified into three categories, namely, normal program of record (POR), new program with traditional and/or well-defined acquisition strategy, and advanced concept technology (ACT) program. This chapter offers a new perspective on the development of an effective PPM plan for ACT programs. For the ACT program type, the traditional PPM is usually not applicable and required to be handled differently according to the uncertainty associated with the technical requirements and associated technology and corresponding cost risks. The chapter provides an overview of typical ACT PPM and associated planning, execution, and management activities from both government and contractor’s perspectives. In addition, the chapter attempts to (i) quantify the risks associated with ACT programs in terms of innovation indicators using simplified Cooper chart, and (ii) develop a set of recommended PPM activities that can be used as a basic framework for conducting the planning and execution of PPM of ACT programs
